Methodology

How this calculator works

The calculator works out the basic allowance using the scale in § 84 EStG. On the first €360 of own contribution per year there are 50 cents per euro, on everything above that up to €1,800 another 25 cents, and at €540 it stops. There is no more than that. The child allowance under § 85 EStG comes on top: €300 per child eligible for child benefit, reached in full from an own contribution of €25 a month. The calculator derives your marginal tax rate from your gross income under § 32a EStG. It then checks whether the special expenses deduction is worth more than the allowance.

Costs

What an Altersvorsorgedepot may cost

Nobody knows the prices. No provider has presented a binding price list so far, because certification by the Federal Central Tax Office only begins in fall 2026. This calculator therefore turns the question around and shows you up to which level of ongoing costs the Altersvorsorgedepot still makes sense compared with a non-subsidized ETF account. As soon as the first real terms are on the table, you will have a benchmark.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

With an own contribution of €1,200 a year it comes to €390 in basic allowance. The government gives 50 cents on each of the first €360, that is €180, and 25 cents on the remaining €840, another €210. With one child, €300 is added.

From €1,800 a year, that is €150 a month. At that point the €540 is exhausted. Anyone paying in more receives no additional allowance — contributions of up to €6,840 a year are possible, but only €1,800 of that is subsidized.

That depends on three factors: your allowance, your tax rate in retirement and the account costs. In a non-subsidized account, 30% of the gains stay tax-free through the partial exemption; in the Altersvorsorgedepot the entire payout is taxed at your personal rate. The calculator compares the two.

Because they do not exist yet. No provider has published a binding price list, and certification only starts in fall 2026. Every comparison table on the web that names specific percentages for individual institutions today is estimated or invented.

The MSCI World has returned 7% to 8% a year over the long term, mixed portfolios 4% to 6%. The preset is 5.5%, which is a conservative figure for a broadly diversified global portfolio. If you want to plan cautiously, use less.

The transferred balance acts as initial capital in the calculator and earns a return from the start. By law the transfer does not count as a cancellation, so allowances and tax advantages you have received are preserved. Switching, acquisition and distribution costs may still apply.

Benefits from subsidized contributions are taxed in full at your personal tax rate under § 22 no. 5 EStG, including allowances and capital gains. Benefits from non-subsidized contributions are generally taxed on the income portion. The calculator estimates your pension tax rate from your income today.

For members with compulsory cover under the health insurance scheme for pensioners, no contributions are due on the payout. Voluntary members of the statutory scheme, by contrast, pay under § 240 SGB V on their entire economic capacity — this mainly affects the self-employed.

You withdraw 4% of the initial capital every year. If markets do well, capital is left at the end; if they do badly, the securities account can be empty sooner. The alternative in the calculator is the annuity: a fixed monthly amount under which the account is planned to reach zero.

The preset is 2%, which matches the European Central Bank’s target. Historically Germany has been between 1.5% and 3%. If you switch on show values in today’s money, you also see what your final balance would be worth in today’s purchasing power.

It provides a model calculation based on your entries and the subsidy and tax rules in force under the Retirement Provision Reform Act. Returns, inflation and future tax rates are assumptions, not promises. This is no substitute for advice.
