Methodology

How this calculator works

The calculator works out the basic subsidy using the tiers in § 84 EStG. On the first 360 euros of your own contribution a year there are 50 cents per euro, on everything above that up to 1,800 euros another 25 cents, and at 540 euros it stops. No more than that. The child subsidy under § 85 EStG comes on top, 300 euros per child eligible for child benefit, already reached in full from 25 euros of own contribution a month. The calculator derives your marginal tax rate from your gross income under § 32a EStG. It then checks whether the special-expense deduction is worth more than the subsidy.

Costs

What an Altersvorsorgedepot may cost

Nobody knows the prices. No provider has yet presented a binding price list, because certification by the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern only begins in autumn 2026. This calculator therefore turns the question around and shows you up to what level of ongoing costs the Altersvorsorgedepot still pays off compared with a free ETF account. As soon as the first real terms are on the table, you have a yardstick.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

On 1,200 euros of own contribution a year it is 390 euros of basic subsidy. The state gives 50 cents on each of the first 360 euros, that is 180 euros, and 25 cents on the remaining 840 euros, another 210 euros. With one child a further 300 euros are added.

From 1,800 euros a year, that is 150 euros a month. The 540 euros are then exhausted. Anyone paying in more receives no additional subsidy — contributions of up to 6,840 euros a year are possible, but only 1,800 of them are subsidized.

It depends on three figures: your subsidy, your tax rate in retirement and the account costs. In a free account 30 percent of the gains stay tax-free through the partial exemption, in the Altersvorsorgedepot the entire payout is taxed at your personal rate. The calculator sets the two against each other.

Because they do not exist yet. No provider has published a binding price list, certification only starts in autumn 2026. Every comparison table on the web that quotes concrete percentages for individual institutions today is estimated or invented.

Over the long term the MSCI World has returned 7 to 8 percent a year, mixed portfolios 4 to 6 percent. The default is 5.5 percent, which is a conservative figure for a broadly diversified world portfolio. Anyone wanting to plan cautiously takes less.

The transferred balance acts as starting capital in the calculator and earns a return from the outset. By law the transfer does not count as a cancellation, so subsidies and tax advantages already received are preserved. Switching, sign-up and distribution costs may however apply.

Benefits from subsidized contributions are taxed in full at your personal rate under § 22 number 5 EStG, including subsidies and capital gains. For non-subsidized contributions the taxation of the income share generally applies. The calculator estimates your pension tax rate from your income today.

For those with compulsory cover in the health insurance scheme for pensioners, no contributions are due on the payout. Voluntarily insured members, by contrast, pay under § 240 SGB V on their entire economic capacity — this mainly affects the self-employed.

You withdraw four percent of the starting capital each year. If the market performs well, capital is left over at the end; if it performs badly, the account can run dry earlier. The alternative in the calculator is the annuity: a fixed monthly amount with which the account is planned to reach zero.

The default is two percent, which matches the European Central Bank’s target. Historically Germany has been between 1.5 and 3 percent. If you switch on real values, you also see what your final capital would be worth in today’s purchasing power.

It provides a model calculation based on your entries and the applicable subsidy and tax rules under the Altersvorsorgereformgesetz. Returns, inflation and future tax rates are assumptions, not promises. It is no substitute for advice.
