Frühstartrente calculator

Ten euros a month sounds like very little. Over twelve years that is €1,440 from the government, and if the money stays invested until retirement, it turns into a multiple of that. This calculator shows you what your child’s Frühstartrente (early-start pension for children) can grow into, with and without a top-up of your own. One note up front. The law has not been passed yet.

This much can come from €10

How much the Frühstartrente becomes depends on your child's age and on what you add yourself. Set both, and you immediately see the possible capital by retirement age. Just try it out.

Frühstartrente (early-start pension for children)

Where the legislation stands

The Federal Cabinet adopted the government bill for the Frühstartrente Act on 12 August 2026. The Bundestag and the Bundesrat still have to approve it; the procedure is planned to be completed this year. It is due to come into force on 1 January 2027, together with the Altersvorsorgedepot (Germany’s state-subsidized retirement investment account).

The government pays ten euros a month per child, from the age of 6 until the age of 18, provided the child’s main residence is in Germany. The money goes into a standard securities account with a private provider of your choice. A cost cap of 1% applies to this default standard product, and until the child comes of age no acquisition or distribution costs may be charged at all.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does the Frühstartrente calculator work?

It brings three figures together. The ten euros from the government, your voluntary top-up and an assumed return. It lets them grow until retirement age. The result is the possible final balance, broken down into the government share, your own contribution and the return.

Why is the government share shown separately?

So that you can see what actually comes from the government and what comes out of your own pocket. The €1,440 subsidy has a strong effect over decades, but usually makes up the smaller part of the final balance. This honesty matters more to us than a big number.

Why does the result change so much when I adjust my child's age?

Because two things happen at once. With an older child, fewer years of government subsidy are left, and at the same time the period in which compound interest can work gets shorter. Together, the two have a disproportionate effect.

What does "continued contributions from 18" mean?

This means the amount your child pays in themselves from their 18th birthday. Set it to zero if only the investment return should continue after they come of age. From 18 the securities account moves into subsidized private retirement provision anyway.

Are the values shown before or after tax?

The values are before tax. When the payout starts at 65, deferred taxationapplies, so the net amount is lower. How large the deduction is depends on your child's tax rate in retirement. And nobody can seriously estimate that today.

Which return is preset, and is it realistic?

The preset is 6% per year. Broadly diversified equity portfolios have historically returned between 7% and 8%, so we are deliberately below that. Over sixty years, even one percentage point makes an enormous difference.

Why does the calculator run to 65 and not to 67?

Because the money is available from 65 at the earliest. That is what the government bill of 12 August 2026 provides for. Anyone who retires later will have accumulated correspondingly more capital.
