Altersvorsorgedepot from 50

Getting started is still worth it when you are over 50. There are usually ten to fifteen years left until retirement, enough time for the subsidy and returns to make a noticeable difference.

Starting late

Is it still worth it after 50?

The investment horizon is shorter, but rarely too short.
Ten to fifteen years is enough for the allowances and the return to take effect. The subsidy runs from your very first contribution and stays invested until retirement begins. What matters more now than for younger savers is strategy: the closer retirement comes, the more sense it makes to dial risk down step by step and to plan the later payout early.
  • up to €540 basic allowance per year
  • usually a 10 to 15 year investment horizon
  • Partial lump-sum withdrawal at the start of retirement
Strategy

What matters from 50 on

In the last years before retirement, strategy counts for more than it does for young savers.

  • Dial risk down over the years.
The closer retirement gets, the more weight the safe portion of your securities account should carry, so that you do not take the full hit of a weak stock market phase shortly before the end.
  • Plan the payout early.
Right at the start, think about whether you would prefer a partial lump-sum withdrawal, a drawdown plan or a lifelong pension.
  • Review existing contracts.
If you still have a Riester contract, you should do the math on a possible switch. Allowances already received are preserved in a qualifying transfer.

How much time is still enough

How much sense the securities account makes when you are over 50 depends above all on the remaining term. With fifteen years to retirement, allowances and returns still have a clear effect; with under ten years, it is mainly the subsidy itself that counts. Even the final years are rarely wasted, because the state allowance is paid on every euro you contribute, no matter how long you have been saving.

Requirements

Are you eligible for the subsidy?

These points should apply to you:

  • You meet the subsidy requirements and file a tax return
  • You pay in at least €120 per year, or €1,800 for the full basic allowance
  • You are resident in Germany

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes. There are usually ten to fifteen years left until retirement. That is enough for the subsidy and the return to have a noticeable effect, even if it is smaller than starting at 25.

That depends on your risk tolerance and on when you retire. The closer retirement gets, the more sense it makes to reduce risk step by step. The default standard product automatically shifts towards safety as you get older.

At the start of retirement you can withdraw up to 30% in one go and take the rest as a drawdown plan or a lifelong pension.

That depends on costs, the remaining term and your existing contract. Allowances and tax advantages already received are preserved in a qualifying transfer. All the details on Riester switch can be found on our page about it.
