Altersvorsorgedepot (Germany's state-subsidized retirement investment account) for families

For families with children the subsidy is greatest. Every child brings an allowance of its own that flows straight into the account and grows there for decades, without you paying more out of your own pocket.

Child allowances

For families the subsidy is the greatest

For families, almost everything revolves around the child allowances.
Every child with an entitlement to child benefit increases your annual subsidy by €300. This money flows straight into the account and works from the very first contribution. Especially when the budget is already tight because of childcare, a larger apartment and everyday life, that is noticeable leverage. For many families the Altersvorsorgedepot is therefore one of the few realistic ways to build up anything at all alongside the state pension.
  • up to €540 basic allowance per year
  • €300 child allowance per child
  • up to €1,680 subsidy for families

How much the child allowances achieve

A model of how the possible subsidy shifts with children.

Family

possible allowance per year

One parent, 1 child

up to €840

One parent, 2 children

up to €1,140

Both parents eligible for the subsidy, 2 children

up to €1,680

The full basic allowance of €540 requires an own contribution of €1,800 per person per year. For eligibility itself, €120 per year (€10 per month) is enough.

Note: Model calculation; the actual allowance depends on your own contribution and on the requirements being met. Not investment advice.

Requirements

Are you eligible for the subsidy?

These points should apply to you:

  • You have one or more children with an entitlement to child benefit
  • You (and your partner, if applicable) pay in at least €120 per year
  • You meet the subsidy requirements and file a tax return
  • You are resident in Germany

Eligible for the subsidy even on a single income

In many families one parent earns full time while the other looks after the children or works part time. That is no reason for anyone to go without the subsidy. If the main-earning parent pays into their account, the partner can still receive their own basic allowance through the derived allowance. A small contribution of their own is usually enough for this. That way the family secures both basic allowances even when only one salary comes in.

Combining it with a non-subsidized ETF account

The Altersvorsorgedepot is the subsidized foundation. But it does not have to remain the only one. If you have something left at the end of the month, add a non-subsidized ETF account that stays available at any time, for example for a bigger car, a first apartment of your own or the children’s education. That way you combine the subsidy for old age with money you can also get at before then.

This is how much subsidy your family gets

How much the government adds depends on your own contribution and on the number of your children. Even one child raises the allowance noticeably, and it rises with every further child. Set your situation – on your own or as a couple, with one or more children – and you will see straight away how much subsidy you can count on per year. It takes less than a minute.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

For each child with an entitlement to child benefit there is up to €300 per year, in addition to the basic allowance of up to €540 per parent eligible for the subsidy.

The child allowance is usually assigned to one parent, similar to the Riester pension. You settle the exact allocation when you apply.

No. But if both are eligible for the subsidy, each parent can use their own basic allowance. That increases the family’s total subsidy.

For eligibility, €120 per year is enough. You reach the full basic allowance with an own contribution of €1,800 per person per year.

Then the child allowance for that child ceases. The capital already invested and the earlier allowances are retained.
