All Altersvorsorgedepot (Germany's state-subsidized retirement investment account) providers for 2027 compared

What matters when choosing – and which provider suits whom.

From 1 January 2027, the first Altersvorsorgedepot accounts can be taken out. No provider is available yet, but the differences will be large – in costs, ETF selection, flexibility and service. We compare the providers against clear, transparent criteria so that you can find the right securities account for your situation.

Nothing can be taken out yet. By law, the product may not be sold before 2027. Add yourself to the waiting list and we will get in touch as soon as there is something real to compare.

Provider comparison

Who will offer an Altersvorsorgedepot from 2027?

Not a single product has been certified so far. Without certification by the Federal Central Tax Office there is no subsidy, and that procedure does not begin until autumn 2026. Even so, 28 of the 35 providers we reviewed have already committed. In our provider monitor you can see, for each company, which source documents the commitment, what date it comes from and when we last checked. Companies without a statement are not left out; they appear in the same list with exactly that note. As soon as the first terms are confirmed, costs and fund selection will be added.

Assessment

Our assessment criteria

These are the criteria we use to assess every provider.

  • Total costs
The most important criterion. Over decades, even small differences have a major impact – ETF and fund costs, account fees, transaction and administration costs all count.
  • ETF and fund range
A broad, high-quality range allows a well-diversified portfolio across different asset classes, regions and strategies.
  • Savings plan features
Easy setup, automatic execution and flexibly adjustable contributions support continuous investing.
  • Flexibility
Changing your contribution, pausing payments, adjusting your strategy: the securities account should fit changing circumstances in life.
  • Ease of use
A clear interface makes contributions, performance and your portfolio easy to follow.
  • Service and support
Competent help with specialist, legal and above all technical questions reduces uncertainty. Even with a digital securities account, fast and understandable support by chat, phone or email counts.
  • Sustainability options
Access to sustainable ETFs and funds and the option to factor ESG criteria into the selection.
  • Digital features
App, digital documents, automatic reports plus analysis and planning tools. The less paper, the better.
  • Payout and withdrawal options
In retirement, what counts is being able to withdraw your assets flexibly, predictably and tax-efficiently.
  • ETF account offering
Being able to open an additional ETF account with the same AVD provider simplifies investing and improves clarity and transparency.

How we assess

We assess every provider against these ten criteria. We weight total costs most heavily, followed by ETF selection and flexibility, because they have the greatest influence on long-term success. Each criterion feeds into an overall score with a point value. The basis is the providers’ official product information and the statutory requirements; we update the assessment as soon as terms change.

We are not a product provider, we receive no payment for better placement, and we assess independently.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When can I take out an Altersvorsorgedepot?

From 1 January 2027. Before then nobody may sell it, as the law states. What the product is and how the subsidy works is explained on the page Altersvorsorgedepot.

What should I look for when choosing a provider?

First, the costs. Over thirty years they have a stronger effect than anything else, and offers only become comparable through the Reduction in yield. After that, ETF selection, savings plan flexibility and service count. But little of this can be compared today: five companies have published their own prices, the rest give no figure.

What does an Altersvorsorgedepot cost?

Almost nobody knows to this day. The legislator caps the reduction in yield (RIY) of the default standard product at one percent per year, and this cap applies to everyone. So far, five companies have published their own prices. For the other 67 there is nothing on this. Anyone who already quotes you a figure for a particular company did not get it from that company.

Which ETFs can I choose?

At most companies this has not yet been decided. Two already name their funds. quirion offers the Vanguard FTSE Global All-Cap and the Vanguard Global Aggregate Bond EUR Hedged in its standard securities account, Smartbroker+ offers three variants with MSCI World, MSCI ACWI or FTSE All-World. For the rest, we will add the selection as soon as the company names it itself. Which ETFs are eligible for the subsidy at all is set out in the law.

Can I switch provider later?

Yes, switching is provided for by law. It becomes expensive in the first five years. SV Sachsen and VOLKSWOHL BUND both write that each side may charge up to €150, the transferring provider and the new one. Together, that is up to €300. After five years the fee is to be dropped, which is how both companies read the law. More on this at Riester switch.
